Discussion:
[influxdb] influxdb won't start

I just downloaded influxdb 0.8.8 on an CentOS 6.4 system. When I run sudo /etc/init.d/infludb start, it indicates that influxdb started ok.

sudo /etc/init.d/influxdb start
Setting ulimit -n 65536
Starting the process influxdb [ OK ]
influxdb process was started [ OK ]

however, if I then check status, it indicates that it failed.

sudo /etc/init.d/influxdb status
Setting ulimit -n 65536
influxdb Process is not running [ FAILED ]

The log file is empty. I tried modifying config.toml and set logging level to debug and fine, but still nothing gets written to the log file.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to fix this?

So I modified the startup script to not redirect output from the startup command. Now I see the problem. Ends up I don't have a /home/influxdb/nohup.out file. For that matter, don't have a /home/influxdb directory. I'm not much of a Linux guy, shouldn't these have gotten created during install of InfluxDB? Any suggestions on how to correct the issue?

Anyone? I took a look at the scripts involved in installation. From what I can tell, post_install.sh is responsible for creating the influxdb user. Oddly, it appears to be specifically configured to not create a home directory. If influxdb requires a influxdb home directory with a nohup.out file in order to start, why is the script configured to not create a home directory for the user??? Here's the relevant line from the script:

useradd --system -U -M influxdb

get any errors? ~/xdev/gocodez/bin/influxd -config

Also make sure to delete the previous database (by default in /tmp)

When you say next release, do you mean v0.9.0-rc18? If so, that's only for 64bit systems and I'm on a 32bit system. I tried modifying my init.sh script with the single line change but it still fails to start. I removed the last part of the line for directing output to STDOUT and the error I see is:

nohup: failed to run command '/usr/bin/influxdb' : no such file or directory.

If I do a directory listing at /usr/bin/, I see this...

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Mar 29 16:24 influxdb -> /opt/influxdb/current/influxdb
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
https://github.com/influxdb/influxdb/pull/2114
I don't know if this is the cause of your issue, but this change should mean that the output from 'nohup' is re-directed properly. Assuming this is merged, it will be in the next release.
